Flight training in France

France has a long aviation heritage and one of Europe's most diverse flight training environments, from Alpine mountain flying to Mediterranean coastal routes. The Direction Generale de l'Aviation Civile (DGAC) oversees a mix of state-funded and private schools, including ENAC, which offers free tuition with an Air France career track.

Training costs and programs

French schools typically offer 200-280 VFR days per year, with better conditions in the south. Integrated ATPL programs range from EUR 66,000 to EUR 95,000, making France one of the more affordable options in Western Europe. The modular route is particularly popular here, with many students combining PPL at an aeroclub with professional training at an ATO.

Practical information for students

Popular training regions include Provence (Aix-les-Milles, LFMA), the Riviera (Cannes-Mandelieu, LFMD), and the southwest (Toulouse area). Many schools conduct training in French by default, so confirm the instruction language before enrolling. Living costs range from EUR 700-1,200 per month. France has a strong aeroclub culture where PPL training can be significantly cheaper than commercial ATOs.
